BTS: How to Enable Rich Pins on Pinterest

For this week's behind the (blog) scenes, I wanted to share how I enabled rich pins for my site on Pinterest. It was super simple and only took a few minutes.

Super simple instructions on how to enable rich pins on Pinterest

WHAT EXACTLY ARE RICH PINS?

Rich Pins add a little extra something to your pins which help them stand out on Pinterest.  By enabling rich pins, your pins will show your favicon and blog name as well as the blog post title on all of your pins. You can see see some examples below on a few of my pins.

Super simple instructions on how to enable rich pins on Pinterest
Pinterest has their own set of instructions here, but they aren't very clear. So, here are some dumbed-down steps for you to follow, but only if you're comfortable with making changes to your blog's code.

STEP 1 // META DATA
Copy & paste the following meta data somewhere in between your <head> </head> tags (don't be like me and always back up your site before making any code changes):

If you don't have a lifestyle blog, you can change the purple highlighted text to whatever suits your blog category best (ie. Design, Technology, Food)

<meta expr:content='data:post.title' property='og:title'/>
<meta expr:content='data:blog.metaDescription' property='og:description'/>
<meta content='article' property='og:type'/>
<meta expr:content='data:blog.url' property='og:url'/>
<meta expr:content='data:blog.title' property='og:site_name'/>
<meta expr:content='data:post.timestampISO8601' property='article:published_time'/>
<meta content='Lifestyle' property='article:section'/>
<b:loop values='data:post.labels' var='label'>
<meta expr:content='data:label.name' property='article:tag'/>
</b:loop>

Note: I'm not the original author of the above meta code, I tried to trace back and it looks like it may have originated here

STEP 2 // VALIDATE
Go to this URL: http://vhns.co/RichPinsValidator
Enter a URL for any blog post to test

STEP 3 // VERIFY ON PINTEREST
Go to Pinterest and verify that your new rich pins are showing. You can use the following URL, just replace the YOURURLHERE with your URL: https://www.pinterest.com/source/YOURURLHERE/

And now you should have rich pins!
